Summer time invites us to put away those long pants we've been wearing all year long and indulge in showing off those legs you've been working so hard on. Shorts have been something I didn't find comfortable shopping for, not because I've been skipping leg day (everyday is leg day bro!) but because the ones were just baggy and unsightly. Are there any stylish short that fit the athletic man? I could make the short shopping process more complicated than it actually is but i'm a dude and I keep my shopping simple and my short requirements simple so here was what I was looking for.
Who wears short shorts? Not this guy! Now there are shorts that are appropriate for working out that are fairly short and it makes sense in that context. But in this context of style my length requirement was pretty simple: I wanted the shorts to either hit the knee or be about half to three quarters of an inch above the knee. That's a personal preference, I've been through the phase of baggy below the knee shorts and like I mentioned in my last blog post, 5 (more) Things I Love About Men's Style, point #3 was I dress my age. I believe as you mature in age, your wardrobe should mature with you.If you already have shorts you love and they fit you well but you don't like the long length, a tailor can help you.
Summer friendly fabrics! Light cotton, linen, silk and seersuckers or a blend of any of them. The reason being that these fabrics are loosely woven therefore making them breathable. The last thing you want is to be hot down there. One thing that may benefit us athletic men is a blend of spandex. one of the shorts I got from Old Navy is a cotton/spandex blend which gives the shorts a bit of a stretch in my movements. It won't be my first choice to hit the squat rack with them but if push comes to shove and all of my gym shorts are in the laundry, these built in flex shorts would work just fine.
Cargo Shorts or Nah?
Push come to shove, ok I'll wear it.........at night...........when no one is looking. It just doesn't look sleek and stylish with those extra pockets and rugged look and some have strings hanging from the bottom, so I'll pass.
Shorts shopping simplified! Notice how I didn't mention anything about color or pattern because those two are the least of my concerns. Colors are endless so pick what you want, patterns are rare but if you do find some have fun and avoid making your entire outfit too busy. These pants I got were from Old Navy but that's not knocking any other stuff, I'm sure other stores have similar type of stretchy shorts that flatter the fit man's physique.
