I have a TON of fun socks! You must be aware of these right? Those crazy looking, bright colored, funky design socks that make any ensemble pop. My experience with fun socks have been great, starting back when I worked at Men's Wearhouse. (NOTE: Men's Wearhouse put me on to alot of stuff so I can't ever knock them.)
They are a conversation starter, something that folks tend to notice first in an outfit leading to a compliment here and there. In my everlong pursuit to find crazy socks I stumbled upon a company called Kim Chi Socks whose fun socks caught my eye because they were different. This wasn't your usual crazy pattern sock but it seem to have a theme to it, a message if you will.
Well that's different, a sock with a message bringing awareness to certain issues? Pretty cool. So I reached out and Kim Chi Socks were kind enough to send some socks and they look and feel even better in person. Let's dive in shall we.
Geaux Nola Socks
The founder of Kim Chi Sock, Jason, is originally from New Orleans and I appreciate how he incorporates the N.O in his socks. These particular socks are special because they pay homage to a tragic period in N.O and American history, Hurricane Katrina.
I didn't know anyone personally who was affected by that other than my Frat brothers down there but I was just as stunned and appalled at the tragedy and the aftermath response. We live in a fast paced society and other than the once a year memorial media news outlets do on August 29th, it's pretty much out of sight out of mind so it's pretty cool to have a consistent reminder of the lives that were lost and the resilience of the folks of New Orleans which is what the Fluer De Lis stands for.
Black Power Socks
As soon as I saw these the first thing that popped in my mind is that scene from the movie CB4 "awwww I'm black y'all, and I'm black y'all, And I'm blackety black and I'm black y'all".
Probably my favorite out of the trio, these socks are a constant reminder that I shouldn't take an opportunity for granted.
It honors the black folks who have paved the way, and shed blood along the way, for people like me to have the freedom they sacrificed for.
The black fist has always represented strength, solidarity and fortitude among our people who always seem to find a way out of no way, and something out of nothing.
Btw, just a point to note, being pro black doesn't mean anti _______(fill in the blank).
The last of the trio. I love how each has their own theme to it and it isn't just a cool design. I'll admit, living in Massachusetts and seeing the black and gold "B" I thought it had something to do with the Boston Bruins but a deeper look reveal something more important.
This particular one brought to my attention something I've heard about but wasn't too well knowledgeable in. What is Bitcoin? Ok, take your credit card for example, you can't see the physical cash but you know it's there. You can easily go to an ATM and take whatever you need out. Bitcoin is sorta like that without the ATM (Bitcoin have their own versions on ATMs) part. It is a digital currency that can translate to physical cash the value of which is determined by the market.
As long as there is internet connectivity, it can be sent to someone who doesn't have access to a bank by connecting digital wallets. People use bitcoin as "real" money to make purchases online. Not regulated by the government, easy to transfer and a low cost, and very hard to counterfeit and inflate, the bitcoin has been flying under the radar but with companies such as Starbucks and Amazon accepting them, expect them to become more mainstream.......and of course these socks bring awareness to its significance.
Fun socks are conversation starters but the conversation is usually centered around the cool patterns on the sock. Not only are Kim Chi Socks conversation starters, they are educational pieces that provide the opportunity to enlighten someone on an ongoing or past issue. I know for sure now my interest has been piqued on Bitcoins. Who knew you could be stylish and impart knowledge or bring awareness to an issue at the same time. I hope this a start to future of message theme socks. I'm a fan. Thanks Kim Chi Socks!
